The Department of Geology, Jagannath Borooah University, organized a student interactive lecture session, “GeoConnect 6.0,” on 14th August 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in Conference Hall 2, on the eve of the 79th Independence Day.
The session was graced by Mr. Abhinab Borah, Senior Geologist, Geological Survey of India (GSI) and an alumnus of the Department (Batch of 2008). He delivered an insightful talk on “GSI and Its Role in Nation Building.”
Mr. Borah highlighted that the Geological Survey of India, established in 1851, plays a pivotal role in the nation’s geoscientific development through its contributions to exploration and development, geoscientific research, data sharing, and nation building. GSI’s efforts aim to foster an economically and socially vibrant India, driving progress and prosperity for its citizens. He also elaborated on the five core missions of GSI: such as Baseline Geoscience Data Collection; Natural Resource Assessment; Geoinformatics; Multidisciplinary Geosciences; and Training and Capacity Building.
Additionally, he discussed landslide susceptibility mapping and hazard management, emphasizing their importance in disaster preparedness.
The session began with the objective of the meeting presented by Ms. Sunakshi Gogoi (B.Sc. 5th Semester), followed by a brief introduction of the guest by Ms. Snigdha Duwarah (B.Sc. 3rd Semester). The invited guest was felicitated with a phulam gamusa and a memento by Ms. Shreya Sharma and Ms. Anindita Das (B.Sc. 1st Semester).
The program was hosted by Ms. Ivypriya Borkakoty (B.Sc. 1st Semester), who also delivered the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of this engaging and informative session.
