The Department of History, Jagannath Barooah University, in collaboration with the Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies (DHAS), Indigenous and Tribal Affairs Studies, Government of Assam, jointly organised the Narayani Handique Memorial Lecture on December 9, 2025, at Conference Hall No. 1 of the university.The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Jyoti Prasad Saikia, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath Barooah University. Dr. Utpal Jyoti Mahanta, Registrar of the University, was also present on the occasion. Dr. Sangita Gogoi, Director of DHAS, delivered the introductory address, highlighting the life and contributions of Narayani Handique and the academic significance of instituting the memorial lecture.The resource person for the memorial lecture was Dr. Lakhipriya Gogoi, Associate Professor, Department of English, Dibrugarh University. She delivered an insightful lecture on the topic “The Journey of Assamese Women from Domesticity to Print Media: Two Women’s Magazines of Twentieth Century Assam.” In her address, Dr. Gogoi highlighted the role of print media in empowering Assamese women and discussed the significant contributions of two important women-centric magazines of Assam, namely Ghar Jeuti and Aidur Jonaki Baat. She elaborated on how these magazines provided a platform for women to express their voices and actively participate in the creative and intellectual spheres.The lecture session was anchored by Mr. Pankaj Goswami, Head of the Department of History. The programme was attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students from different departments of the university. The event concluded with an interactive discussion, enriching academic engagement and scholarly reflection on women’s contributions to Assamese literary and cultural history.
