Celebration of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s Birth Centenary at Jagannath Barooah University

Jagannath Barooah University observed the birth centenary of the legendary bard of the Brahmaputra, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, on 8th September in a colourful and befitting manner. The programme was organised by the Jagannath Barooah University Teachers’ Unit, with active assistance from the Women’s Cell of the University. Teachers, students, and staff participated enthusiastically in paying homage to the immortal cultural icon.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Prof. Jyoti Prasad Saikia, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Jagannath Barooah University, who also delivered a special address on the topic “Bhupen Hazarikar Gitot Manobia Promulyabudh”. His insightful reflections highlighted the humanitarian values embedded in Dr. Hazarika’s timeless creations.

As part of the cultural tribute, three chorus songs—“Manuhe Manuhor Babe”, “Axom Amar Rupohi”, and “Topto Tikhare Agnixokti”—were rendered melodiously by teachers. This was followed by poem recitations by Dr. Surajit Sharma (Academic Registrar), Mr. Subhasish Sharma (Dean of Students’ Affairs), Mr. Pankaj Goswami (Head, Department of History), and Dr. Pronob Boruah.

Soulful rendition of Bhupendra Sangeet was presented by Dr. Minakshi Phukan Hazarika (Dean of Arts), Dr. Mrinal Nath, Dr. Champak Deka, Dr. Ankur Gogoi, Dr. Pushpanjali Hazarika, Ashish Kashyap, Gayatri Chutia, and Akashdipta Thakur. From the students’ side, Jonak Nath and Bhargabi Sonowal enthralled the audience with their performances.

The event was smoothly anchored by Dr. Kalyan Das, Secretary of Jagannath Barooah University Teachers’ Unit, along with Akashdipta Thakur. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks offered by Mr. Subhasish Sharma, Dean of Students’ Affairs, expressing gratitude to all contributors and participants for making the celebration a grand success.

The entire programme not only paid homage to the memory of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika but also reflected the enduring relevance of his songs and messages of humanity, harmony, and cultural pride.
